 Ramayana Chapter 6-Kaikeyi and Manthara

Ramayana Chapter 6-Kaikeyi and Manthara

Several years passed after the marriage of Rama with Sita. Dasaratha was approaching old age and wanted to retire after passing over the Kingly responsibilities to his eldest son Rama by crowning him as King. So sage Vasishta was invited to discuss and do all preparations for the coronation ceremony.

The queens Kausalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra were very happy hearing the news of coronation . Queen Kaikeyi had a hunchbacked maid servant by name Manthara . She was favorite of Kaikeyi. Manthara did not like Rama to be the King for her own reasons.

She seized this opportunity to pollute the mind of Kaikeyi . She convinced the queen that her days of glory would be soon gone and she may have to serve as supplicant to queen Kausalya and Bharatha would have to be slave to Rama .

Now Manthara reminds Kaikeyi of the two boons Dasaratha had given her when she had saved his life in a battle years back. Manthara convinces Kaikeyi to ask for them . She further advises Kaikeyi to weep and cry pretending anger when King Dasaratha would come and ask for those two boons to be fulfilled immediately.

First boon would be that Prince Bharatha should be consecrated as the King of Ayodhya and the second boon would be Rama should be exiled to the forest for 14 years.
